The private motor vehicle has an emergency control unit (10) which is automatically activated in the event of a crash. The rear hatch (6) is released from its lock to open, and each seat back (13,14) is unlocked and folded rearwards if it is unoccupied and there is not an occupied seat behind it. Operating means (19,20) are provided for each seat (4,5) to effect the rearwards folding of the seat back and positioned so that on one side they are accessible for person occupying the seat, and on the other side for a person behind the seat.
