PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that conventionally in a shaft furnace, refuse or refuse and auxiliary fuel are fed into a furnace from the side of a furnace body 2, accumulation of refuse or refuse and auxiliary fuel in the furnace body 2 is brought into uneven state, drift of high temperature gas in refuse occurs, and the increase of an operation cost and an equipment cost is caused thereby. SOLUTION: A feed port 5 for refuse or refuse and auxiliary fuel is formed in the side of the shaft furnace and a notch 27 is situated in a furnace directly below the feed port 5. It is preferable that size of protrusion of the notch 27 in the furnace be 1/2 the inside diameter of the furnace in a zone 261 of the shaft furnace where refuse is rich.
