PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat insulting material for a roof substrate, simplifying work execution, capable of certainly fastening itself on a vertical rafter and a lateral rafter by nailing, preventing occurrence of dew condensation and maintaining strength for a long period of time without mildewing and getting wet into a sheathing roof board plate. SOLUTION: The heat insulating material 1 for a roof substrate is roughly rectangular, a groove 2 is provided on the upper surface side and a groove 3 is provided on the lower surface side so that the rafters can be engaged with it. The grooves 2, 3 extend in the orthogonal direction. The grooves 2, 3 are communicated to each other at a crossing part 5 of the grooves 2, 3. A mark 6 is provided to display a center of this crossing part 5. End surfaces of four sides of the heat insulating material 1 are in a shiplap shape.
