The sender of a transaction message for an electronic transaction is assigned a smart card with an associated unique identity and a private key stored in the card in a protected manner and for which an associated public key is generally available. Under the sender's control the sender inputs message information to create a transaction message with the aid of a mobile telecommunication unit controlled by the smart card, the message containing information necessary for the transaction, and then digitally signs the message in the smart card using the private key before sending the message over the telecommunication network.
