The invention concerns a device comprising a laser signal transmitter-receiver head (1) arranged at the input of the conveyor belt (2) and designed to transmit and receive a scanning beam (4a) across the width of the conveyor belt (2) said transmitter-receiver head (1) being itself connected to a computer (5) calculating said distances between the transmitter-receiver head (1) and the products (P) and the conveyor belt, and calculating from said distances the profile of the products on the conveyor belt and deducing from said data the quantity of products on said conveyor.
