[Also in Group XXVIII] A flexible tube 2 for replacement of blood vessels is formed by a stiffened braided tube of nylon or acrylonitrile fibres provided with permanent annular crimps to prevent collapse during flexing. A braided tube is stretched on a mandrel, stiffened by immersion in formic acid and compressed on the mandrel to produce the crimps which are set by heating in an oven to 110-150 C. and released slightly by immersion in water at about 100 C. to make them more flexible. |
