PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographic element having a means of reducing fogging during storage, due to the presence of a fragmentable electron donor in the element. SOLUTION: The photographic element includes a base, having low oxygen permeability and at least one silver halide emulsion layer containing a fragmentable electron donor compound of the formula X-Y or a compound having a part of the formula -X-Y'. In the formulae, X is an electron donor part and Y' is a releasable proton H or a releasable group Y. When Y' is the proton, a baseβ- is present in the emulsion layer, and (1) X-Y' has 0-1.4 V oxidation potential, (2) the oxidized form of X-Y' provides a radical X.and a released fragment Y', when subjected to a bond cleavage reaction, and optionally, (3) the radical X.has an oxidation potential equal to or more negative than -0.7 V.
