PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply producing a metal oxide component- gradient composite material which has a good surface appearance, has a high metal oxide concentration in the surface portion, and comprises the metal oxide and the cured product of a cross-linking and polymerizing compound. SOLUTION: This method for producing the component gradient composite material which comprises the metal oxide and the cured product of the cross- linking and polymerizing compound and in which the concentration of the metal oxide is continuously changed in the thickness direction, characterized by bringing the shaped product of a homogeneous solution containing the cross-linking and polymerizing compound and the metal alkoxide or a shaped product obtained by semi-curing the above shaped product into contact with an aqueous solution for a constant time, and then curing the cross-linking and polymerizing compound.
