A paste or liquor for printing or padding textile fabrics comprises a pigment, a basic self-cross-linking polymer and an aqueous emulsion of a copolymer having reactive groups capable of reacting under heat with the basic polymer. Specified basic self-cross-linking polymers are the condensation products of epichlorohydrin, dichlorohydrin, halogen fatty acid esters or di-or poly-hydroxy compounds with di- or polyamines such as propylene diamine, tetramethylene-diamine, hexamethylene diamine, g ,g -diaminopropyl - methyl - amine, g ,g 1 - diaminopropyl ether, dipropylene-triamine, diaminopropyl - ethylene diamine, diaminopropyl-tetramethylene - diamine, diaminopropyl - hexamethylene diamine, bis-(g -aminopropyl)piperazine, N - (1,6 - hexane - diamine) - 3 - pyrrolidone and polyethylene diamine. Specified copolymers are those obtained by polymerizing monomers containing reactive groups, such as acrylic and methacrylic acid and their amides, semi-esters of maleic or fumaric acid, acrylic acid monobutylamide, methyl-acrolein, the alkyl ethers of the methylol compounds of acrylic acid amide or of methacrylic acid amide and the acrylic or methacrylic acid glycide esters, with butadiene, isoprene, dimethyl-butadiene, chloroprene, glycol diacrylates, acrylic acid allyl esters, styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl ethers and maleic or fumaric acid diesters. The paste or liquor may also contain triacrylformal, polyacrylamide, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate and basic non-self-cross-linking polymers and may be thickened with a benzine emulsion. Examples describe the printing of cotton, regenerated cellulose and nylon fabrics, additional substances present in the paste being urea, glycol, glycerol and methylcellulose.
