<p>A smartcard (250) that is capable of generating output in a form that is comprehendible by a cardholder is incorporated in a device that includes electronic circuitry (256) which is embedded in a monocrystalline substrate (252). The smartcard also includes a monocrystalline accommodating layer (260) positioned between the monocrystalline substrate (252) and a compound semi-conductor layer (266). The compound semiconductor layer (266) has an indicator (268) fashioned therein to provide a user interface.
