The present invention relates to isolated genetic sequences encoding proteins which direct the biosynthesis of the antibiotic everninomicin in <i>Micromonospora carbonacea</i>. The isolated biosynthetic gene cluster serves as a substrate for bioengineering of antibiotic structures.
