Analyzing gas components in IC engine exhaust comprises separating off a partial gas current from the main stream via a by-pass (1). This passes through a measuring section (5) and is then fed back into the main stream. The speed of flow in the by-pass is independent of that of the main stream. An Independent claim is included for a device for carrying out the above process in which the bypass has an inlet (3) and outlet (7) positioned in the main stream and is fitted with a pressure regulating unit.
