PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a sewing condition designated by a sewing condition designating means as an electric signal by a construction excellent in its reliability. SOLUTION: A sewing machine comprises the sewing condition designating means for designating the sewing condition of the sewing machine, identifying information provided in the sewing condition designating means to identify the sewing condition, a projecting means for projecting light on the identifying information and a light receiving means for receiving light obtained as a result of transmission of the projected light through the identifying information or light reflected by the identifying information to detect the identifying information.
