A sample, solvent and/or reagents are applied under control, by a liquid jet, along a first axis parallel to the carrier. Set quantities are applied at predetermined locations of the stationary phase. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding chromatographic apparatus. The carrier for the stationary phase support moves longitudinally under control. Above the support an applicator (17) deposits the sample, solvent and pre- and post chromatographic reagents for thin layer chromatography. The applicator includes liquid containers (18, 19). At the end facing the support, individually-controlled nozzles produce metered liquid jets. Preferred Features: Application takes place at various locations of the stationary phase, in differing quantities. Energy is supplied to evaporate solvent or cause reaction, by directing a laser beam onto the substrate, moving it along the axis under control. During application of substances and/or energy, the substrate is moved along a second axis at right angles to the first. Stages include: sample application, substrate impregnation, developing, revealing, drying and preserving. The liquid container in the apparatus comprises a replaceable printing head, which can be replaced in the transversely-traveling holder (16). Above the support, and directed towards it, a controlled, traveling fiber optic (20) transmits drying and/or reaction energy in the form of the laser beam, onto the stationary phase. The fiber optic is attached to a holder for the liquid container. The stationary phase is arranged on the planar carrier. At its edges, free of the stationary phase, a seal is provided for the cover plate, completing a chromatographic chamber with application slot in the cover, for sample and solvent.
