The gearbox for a front wheel drive vehicle with transverse engine contains an intermediate shaft (24) mounted on the input shaft (37), a secondary shaft (21) permanently in mesh (22,23) with the input shaft (37). Gears (26,27,28) on the intermediate shaft (24) are in mesh with gears (29,30,31) mounted on the exit shaft and coupled to it via clutches (33,34,35). A clutch (25) joins the input shaft (37) to the intermediate shaft (24) and another (36) joins the secondary shaft (21) to the pinion (29). The six speed gearbox consists of an entry shaft (37) in permanent engagement with a secondary shaft (21) through gearing (22,23) and a intermediate shaft (24) mounted round the entry shaft (37) and on which are fixed three pinions (26,27,28). An exit shaft (32) is fitted with three pinions (29,30,31) each one engaging with the pinions (26,27,28) of the intermediate pinion (24). Clutches (25,36,33,34,35) are provided between the entry shaft (37) and the intermediate shaft (24), between each pinion (29,30,31) of the exit shaft (32) and the latter (36), is between the pinion (29) and the shaft (21). With diverse operation of the clutches, the gearbox can give six gear changes in forward drive.
