PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure the concentration of a solution without touching with the solution by solving such a problem that it is especially difficult to measure the concentration of the solution having optical rotation without touching with the solution and to eliminate a movable part to enhance the measuring reliability of the concentration of the solution. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal element having a twist structure is used as an element for controlling optical orientation electrically and, further, a parallelly oriented liquid crystal element is used as a double refractive phase adjusting element and the optical anisotropy of a specimen is automatically compensated by an adaptation control technique using the liquid crystal element and the concentration of the optically active substance in the specimen is calculated from drive voltage necessary for the drive operation of the liquid crystal element. By this constitution, a movable part is eliminated to realize the non- contact measurement of concentration.
