PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital still camera that has only to use an internal RAM (not a memory for temporary storage only but a memory used for image processing process) to attain image pickup and storage without the need for addition to hardware (H/W) unit to the camera compatible with an external RAM, and to provide its image data storage method. SOLUTION: An internal RAM 33 has work areas for image processing process and extra areas to store image data resulting from photographing by the digital still camera. An image data storage device 30 receives image data generated by a photographing processing section 20 and an image data management means 31 stores the image data to an external RAM 34 when an external RAM 34 is inserted to the digital camera or stores the image data to the extra areas of the internal RAM 33 when the external RAM 34 is not inserted to the camera.
