PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium, which enables high-density recording and reproduction, and to provide a method for reproducing the medium. SOLUTION: The medium has a displacement layer, in which magnetic domain walls move to contribute to information reproduction, a memory layer which keeps the recording magnetic domains according to the information and a barrier layer disposed between the displacement layer and the memory layer and having Curie temperature lower than those of the above two layers. The information is reproduced by transferring the recording magnetic domains from the recording layer to the displacement layer and enlarging walls of the magnetic domains in the moving layer at a temperature higher than the Curie temperature of the barrier layer. The moving layer consists of a rare earth and iron group element amorphous alloy and has a composition, in which the magnetization in the rare earth element sublattice and the magnetization in the iron group element sublattice are approximately compensated in the temperature region where the magnetic domain walls move.
