A turbo charger for an internal combustion engine includes a compressor driven by a turbine. The compressor has an impeller located in a flow duct 4 which is surrounded by inner and outer component rings 10, 11 of a transfer ring 8. Slots 9 in the rings 10, 11 define transfer (or bypass) ducts which allow air from the impeller to be re-circulated into, or bypass, the flow duct 4 (see figure 1). Relative movement between the rings 10, 11, controlled by an actuating element 12, allows the slots 9 to be adjusted between overlapping and blocking positions (figures 3 and 4) so that the effective flow area of the flow ducts can be varied to provide optimum performance characteristics. In an alternative embodiment, the rings 10, 11 may be located one behind the other along their centroidal axis. |
