PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decide the direction of an original, even when the characters of a small feature amount or character similar to characters in the forward direction only exists and further, even when there are several sentences in image data. SOLUTION: The circumscribed rectangle of a character is extracted (step S11), the feature vector of the character in the circumscribing rectangle is extracted (step S12), character recognition is performed by using the feature vector (known technology) and the degrees of similarity between the recognized character and first and second candidate characters are respectively calculated in four directions (steps S13, S14 and S15). It is decided as to whether the recognized character is suitable for deciding the direction of sentences (step S16), the number of suitable recognized characters is counted (step S17), an arithmetic value C (j) is found and an angle (direction (j) (of the feature vector), when the arithmetic value C (j) becomes maximum is decided as the direction of that document and the processing is ended (step S18).
