PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve assembling precision by positioning at least the positional relation of two carriages with each other which respectively and independently read and move. SOLUTION: This image reader is provided with a first carriage 1 which has a light source 10 irradiating an original on a contact glass 31 with light and a first mirror 11 reflecting reflected light from the original and a second carriage 2 which has a second and a third mirrors 12, 13 reflecting the reflected light from the first mirror. Therein, the first carriage is supported freely forwards and backwards in the reading and moving direction by the second carriage.
