PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To widen an effective screen even if the effective screen is narrowed by a part read method which shortens a frame cycle in a driving method for a solid-state image pickup element. The method outputs charges obtained by photoelectric conversion of light exposed on an image pickup surface. SOLUTION: A vertical transfer operation is executed in the first prescribed period when an image signal of the effective screen is outputted by using the first transfer pulse of a prescribed cycle, and in the second prescribed period other than the prescribed period, the vertical transfer operation is executed by using the second transfer pulse of a shorter cycle than the prescribed cycle.
