PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of regenerating a catalyst carrying gold superfine particles, by which the catalyst can be regenerated without impairing its catalytic activity. SOLUTION: The method of regenerating the catalyst in which the gold superfine particles are supported on a metal oxide carrier comprises irradiating the catalyst whose catalytic activity has been lowered with light having a wavelength corresponding to the absorption band of the catalyst, in the presence of oxygen.
