PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the sheet and the film of a functionalized polyphenylene ether resin that have a sufficient functional properties such as a coating adhesion, are improved in surface appearance by reducing the amounts of foreign matters, and furthermore, is good in balance of the thermostability and mechanical properties, and therefore, sufficiently respond to industrial requirements. SOLUTION: Obtaining the sheet and the film, composed of (c) the functionalized polyphenylene ether resin, is characterized by reacting an admixture of (A) polyphenylene ether of 100 pts.wt. with (B) a denaturant of 0.01 to 10.0 pts.wt. selected from among a conjugated nonaromatic compound, a dienophile compound having one dienophile group or a precurser of these dienes and dienophile compounds, at a reaction temperature of room temperature or above and melting point or below of (A) polyphenylene ether.
