The actuator (1) has a gas generator (3) connected e.g. to an air bag (2) and comprising an explosive charge (4) made up of a primary pyrotechnic compound (5) designed to control the decomposition of a secondary compound (6). This allows a an interaction of the products of combustion of both compounds within a volume (7) that is not confined or only slightly confines, the interaction being at least partly an oxidation-reduction reaction.
