PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ATM communication equipment that can efficiently conduct ATM protection control at a high-speed. SOLUTION: The ATM communication equipment 100B that communicates an OAM cell relating to virtual path changeover control with an opposite equipment 100A on the occurrence of a fault in a virtual path of an active system to select a standby virtual path from the active virtual path, is provided with a 1st channel adaptor section 11 that contains the virtual path of the active system, has virtual path information of the active system and the standby system, generates a fault notice cell addressed to a channel adaptor section of the standby system according to the detection of a fault with respect to the virtual path of the active system and inserts it to an incoming channel and with a 2nd channel adaptor section 12 that contains the virtual path of the standby system, detects the fault notice cell routed to its outgoing channel, generates an OAM cell relating to a virtual path switching request and inserts it to the outgoing channel.
