PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reading and recording device improved in the degree of satisfaction of a user by shortening the waiting time of the user, who is to read an image, in spite of inexpensive configuration. SOLUTION: A main control part 11 encodes an image read by a reading part 14 by using a codec 16 and stores the image in an image memory 20. Besides, the encoded image stored in the image memory 20 is decoded by the codec 16 and recorded by a recording part 15. When a read request is detected by setting an original to the reading part 14, for example, during recording processing, recording processing is interrupted and the read image is encoded while using the codec 16 in reading processing and stored in the image memory 20. In such a case, after the lapse of prescribed time from the detection of the read request, recording processing is restarted and control is performed so as not to unreasonably interrupt recording processing.
