The image reading apparatus which has an external-light detecting sensor arranged in a position out of the effect of light from an irradiator attached to the apparatus itself, detects an external-light amount which enters into a document surface by use of the sensor, and calculates a main-scan shading corrective coefficient for correcting output value of each pixel in a CCD in response to the detected external-light amount. Therefore, the output value of each pixel in the CCD is accurately corrected based on the calculated coefficient. This allows photographing data to be accurately corrected in response to the external light amount.
