PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controlling device for a sewing machine which can give no feeling of stiffness on a taper bar tack part and can perform over-casting of a button hole with good appearance. SOLUTION: The controlling device 8 provided on the sewing machine 1 for forming an eyelet hole over-casting is constituted of a CPU 32, an ROM 31 and an RAM 33 and storing data containing the value of 'correction of the length of a taper bar' being a corrected value of the flow bar stopping part are stored in the RAM 33. Control data are corrected based on the value of 'correction of the length of a taper bar' and based on these corrected control data, the eyelet hole over-casting stitch 19 is formed in such a way that the length of sewing of the taper bar 19a at the start of sewing and the length of sewing of the taper bar 19b at the end of sewing are different.
