PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain space saving or the like, by using a hydraulic cylinder and a motor in a drive side for driving a hydraulic cylinder in a car side so as to improve a freedom degree of arrangement (layout) of the above cylinder drive means. SOLUTION: This fluid pressure elevator 1 comprises a car 2 mounting a man and a baggage, a rail 3 guiding movement of the car 2, a first hydraulic cylinder 4 driving the car along the rail 3, and a cylinder drive means 5 driving the first hydraulic cylinder 4. The cylinder drive means 5, having a liquid chamber 21 supplying an operating liquid to the first hydraulic cylinder 4 in one surface side of a piston 16, is constituted by a second hydraulic cylinder 6 having a gas chamber 22 charging the other surface side with gas 23 and a motor 7 driving the second hydraulic cylinder 6. The first/second hydraulic cylinders 4, 6 are arranged along the rail 3.
