PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating open circulating cooling water, in which an excess of new water supply is prevented, the used amount of water can be saved, and the quality of circulating cooling water can be made stable. SOLUTION: A portion of the circulating cooling water A is taken out of the open circulating cooling water system 19, and then, the taken circulating cooling water A is filtered using a filter 41 and returned to the open circulating cooling water system 19. When the filter 41 is subjected to reverse washing, the portion of the circulating cooling water A taken out of the open circulating cooling water system 19 is filtered using a part of the effective filtration area of the filter 41 and returned to the open circulating cooling water system 19. The reverse washing is carried out at other effective filtration area of the filter 41 using other portion of the circulating cooling water A taken out of the open circulating cooling water system 19, and exhausted water generated at the time of the reverse washing is discharged to the outside of the open circulating cooling water system 19.
