A wire tensioning device (26), in particular for tensioning a wire of fencing material, comprises fixing means (28) for fixing said wire tensioning device (26) to a fence post (10) and tensioning means (30) for tensioning a wire (32) of said fencing material. The tensioning means (30) comprises a shaft (36), which is rotatably mounted on said fixing means (28). The shaft (36) has a bore (40) therethrough for receiving a wire (32) of said fencing material. The shaft (36) further comprises barb means (44) by which, when said wire (32) is tensioned, rotation of the shaft (36) in the unwinding direction is prevented. An important feature of the wire tensioning device (26) is that the arrangement is such that, when it is mounted on a fence post (10), an axis of the shaft (36) and an axis of the fence post (10) are substantially perpendicular to each other and lie in a plane passing through the fence post (10). |
