PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing the subject compound in high yield by cyanation of a (S)-4-halogeno-3-hydroxybutyric acid lower alkyl ester in the presence of a solvent. SOLUTION: This method for producing the subject compound comprises cyanation of a (S)-4-halogeno-3-hydroxybutyric acid lower alkyl ester in the presence of a solvent; wherein it is characterized that the cyanation is carried out under pressure at 90-120 deg.C.
