The message transmitting method transmits short messages generated in a mobile telecommunications network such as GSM or in multiple access TDMA or CDMA systems or a third generation multimedia messaging system MMS for use in e.g. an internet protocol which does not operate according to the specification of the telecommunication network. A message server (WAMS) uses signaling functions such as the function of signaling system no. 7, according to the network specifications. A file contained in the message server contains routing information for reception of the corresponding service. An exchange function (MSCx) in the server is provided for transmitting the messages based on the routing information. A mobile terminal (MS) selects the address of the server as a target address for transmitting a message, the address corresponding to the application or service. The message is sent to a first service center in the mobile network. The service center asks for the routing information from the file of the message server via a gateway function (GMSC) based on the selected target address. The message is conveyed via the exchange function to a second service center where the application or service is registered. Independent claims also cover a message server and a mobile network.
