THIN FILM MAGNETIC HEAD AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head having highly sensitive and stable reproducing performance by forming a stable perpendicular bias supplying mechanism in a narrow gap length reproducing head for reproducing a recorded signal having a short wavelength for dealing with a trend toward the higher recording density and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: A laminated bias film consisting of two layered laminated films of a bias non-magnetic film and a bias hard magnetic film or consisting of three layered laminated films of the bias non-magnetic film, a bias ferromagnetic film and the bias hard magnetic film is formed on a free magnetic layer constituting a GMR element. The free magnetic layer opposed to the bias hard magnetic film or the bias ferromagnetic film via the bias non-magnetic film is coupled ferromagnetically or anti-ferromagnetically to the bias hard magnetic film or the bias ferromagnetic film by selecting an appropriate film thickness of the bias non-magnetic film to apply stable perpendicular bias to the free magnetic layer and realize stable and highly sensitive reproducing characteristics with less generation of noise.
