An organic electroluminescent device of the type comprises an organic layer 5, 5a or 5b having a luminescent region and provided between an anode 2 and a cathode 3. The organic layer contains a distyryl compound represented by the following general formula (1) Chemical Formula 1 wherein R1 and R4, respectively, represent an unsubstituted phenyl group, and R2 and R3, respectively, represent an aryl group of the following genera formula (2). in which R9, R10, R11, R12 and R13may be the same or different and, respectively, represent a hydrogen atom provided that at least one of them is a saturated or unsaturated alkoxyl group having 2 or more carbon atoms or an alkyl group, and R5, R6, R7 and R8 may be the same or different and, respectively, represent a hydrogen atom provided that at least one of them represents a cyano group, a nitro group or a halogen atom such as F, Cl, Br or I.
