The gas generator has two ignition units (14,16) each with an igniter (20), and contained in a propellant charge (18). The ignition units are ignited at different times, and at different intervals. The intervals between the individual ignition timings are variable, and are determined dependent upon an existing accident situation. Alternatively, there may be two ignition units, both of which are triggered at the same time to achieve max. gas generation. One or all units may have a booster charge (22).
