A structure utilizes rigid fibre-optic light guide lengths (8,9,11,12,15,16) between a measuring point (10) or transmission location in an optional device (101) and transmission-receiving devices (7,14,13,17) on a main printed circuit board (5) of a franking machine (1) to communicate with the optional device through the transmission of light signals.
