In a motor car &c., a driving expanding pulley having fixed and axially slidable flanges 2, 3 is controlled by connecting chambers 5, 6 fast with the axially slidable flange and on opposite sides of an axially fixed piston 7 to the inlet manifold 15 of the car engine, depression of the usual accelerator pedal 19 controlling a butterfly valve 16 in the manifold and allowing a spring 23 to open a valve 13, thus connecting the manifold through pipes 14, 9 to the chamber 5 and selecting a step-up ratio, while actuation of either a manually controlled valve 25 or a service brake controlled valve 27 connects the inlet manifold through pipes 31, 10; 32, 26, 10, respectively, to the chamber 6, thereby obtaining a step-down ratio for engine braking &c. The brake control valve 33 is normally biased by a spring 34 to the position shown, connecting the pipe 26 through a port 28 to the ambient atmosphere. Thus, with the manually controlled valve 25 positioned as shown, the chamber 6 is vented through the pipes 10, 26 &c. to the atmosphere. Actuation of the car service brakes acts either mechanically or, as shown, hydraulically through a pipe 35, to slide the valve 33 against the bias of its spring 34, shutting off the venting port 28 and instead connecting the pipe 26 to the pipe 32, in turn connected to the inlet manifold 15. The ratio of the gearing is also modified by means responsive to the speed of rotatiop of one of its shafts, for example as described in Specification 907,944.
