A vacuum cleaner comprises a surface cleaning head (3) defining an inlet (10), a container (1) for collecting dirt and dust, a primary passageway (8, 9) connecting the inlet (10) in the cleaning head (3) to the container (1) and suctions means (6) for drawing dirt and dust in through the inlet (10) in the cleaning head (3), along the primary passageway (8, 9) and into the container (1). One or more secondary inlets (20, 21) are provided on a surface of the vacuum cleaner remote from the inlet (10) in the cleaning head (3), in order to drawn in airborne dirt and dust.
