PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surface acoustic wave element which has superior transmission characteristics represented with an electromechanical coupling coefficient K2 by using a raw material which is inexpensive and easy to obtain. SOLUTION: The surface acoustic wave element 11 has a base substrate 12, a buffer layer 15 which is formed of perovskite-based compound crystal on the base substrate, a piezoelectric body layer 13 which is formed of KNbO3 single crystal on the buffer layer, and electrodes 14a and 14b which are arranged in contact with the piezoelectric body layer; and a crystal-lattice matching layer 16, which improves the consistency of crystal lattices between the base substrate and buffer layer, is provided between the base substrate 12 and buffer layer 15.
