PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight device, preventing the lowering of brightness and the occurrence of a bright line due to the leakage of a light from an aperture of a side face on an incoming light side and having improved workability. SOLUTION: A beam emitted to surroundings by a cylindrical lamp 1 is reflected and converged by a light reflecting layer 2a of a U-shaped reflecting plate 2 located behind the cylindrical lamp 1 and emitted to the direction of a side end face 3a of a light conductor 3 into which it comes. It is conducted and diffused in the light conductor 3 and further diffused and reflected by a reflecting sheet 4, and then emitted from a display-side surface 3b, as a backlight for a display. The reflecting plate 2 has a L-shape and the reflecting sheet 4 projects and extends from the back of the light conductor 3, without producing an aperture between the reflecting plate 2 and the side end face 3a of the light conductor 3.
