PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the performance of a display optical unit and to reduce the size and weight of a display device. SOLUTION: The display device has a display optical unit having a light source system having a light source, an illumination system for irradiating a display element with the light from the light source and a projection system for projecting the light from the display element and a screen for displaying data on its front surface by projecting the light projected from the display optical unit from its back. The display optical unit is formed with the light source system and the illumination system in such a manner that both systems have approximately equal height relations, thereby, the performance of the display optical unit is enhanced and the size and weight of the display device are reduced.
