1,080,759. Spray-producers. DEVILBISS CO. Dec. 7, 1964 [Jan. 6, 1964], No. 49653/64. Heading B2F. An electrostatic atomizer suitable for spraying coating materials, such as paint, comprises a needle valve 17 adapted to control the paint discharge outlet 16 and operated under the influence of compressed air on a piston 20, an axially extending charging electrode 28 supported on the end of the needle valve 17 and connected to a high D.C. potential so that a region of corona is formed around the electrode, and an air cap 30 disposed concentrically with respect to the outlet 16 and arranged to discharge a whirling stream of compressed air. The air may be whirled by spiral grooves within the cap or by separate tubes (50), Fig. 10 (not shown) arranged outside the cap tangentially with respect to the concentric air and paint outlets. Steam or nitrogen may be used instead of air to atomize the paint and the velocity of the gaseous steam, its direction, and the particle charge &c. are selected so that at least 40%, and preferably 75%, of the paint particles are removed by the electrostatic field from the directive influence of the gaseous stream, Fig. 8 (not shown).
|
