PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape excellent in frictional properties in repetitive running and excellent in repetitive running durability, with respect to the magnetic tape having excellent roll up appearance and a groove formed in a back surface. SOLUTION: The magnetic tape provided with a magnetic layer formed by dispersing a ferromagnetic powder in a bonding agent on one side of a substrate, the back layer formed on the side opposite to the magnetic layer side of the substrate and a recessed groove formed in the surface of the back layer is characterized by that the back layer contains an inorganic powder having Mohs' hardness of >=5 and mean powder size of 0.01-0.15μm.
