PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gate driver capable of eliminating an abnormal operation even in the case in which an output element erroneously holds an on-state and preventing a damage of the output element. SOLUTION: The gate driver changes a state of a state holding circuit 4 for detecting rising and falling edges of a control input signal, and generating an on/off signal according to the detected edges to drive a gate according to the on/off signal. The gate driver comprises a protecting off signal generator 6 for controlling the holding circuit when a holding signal is inputted to forcibly turn off output element 5. Since the output element can be forcibly turned off by the generator, even when the element erroneously holds the on-state, the abnormal operation can be eliminated, and a damage of the element can be prevented.
