PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an English word recognizing device, for reducing redundant processing in the collation of an individual character recognizing result, using dictionary word and realizing English word recognition at a high speed. SOLUTION: A word image input part 1 fetches a word. An individual character recognizing part 2 divides a word image 10, collates it with a dictionary character image and recognizes the character. A character assembly extracting part 3 extracts continuous assemblies 12 from an individual character recognition result 11. A character string tag generating part 4 retrieves a character string index 17 and generates information in the character assemblies 12, which is called a character string tag 13. A character string tag network constructing part 5 connects the connectable character tags 13 and constructs a character string tag network 14. A word recognition result output part 6 retrieves the character string tag network 14, performs sorting, in the order of increasing cumulative cost and outputs a word recognition result 15. A dictionary storage part 7 stores the character string index 17 which is within the words of the continuous character assemblies which are extracted from a preset word group as a recognition object.
