PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chip-type surge absorbing element which is fit for mass production, of low cost, responsive to surface mounting, and is able to delay or prevent short circuit between electrodes. SOLUTION: The surge absorbing element forms a discharge space 10 between a pair of inner electrodes 20 facing each other composed of a main electrode 8 conducting with an outer electrode 7 formed at both ends of edge ceramics 11 and an auxiliary electrode 9. The tip of the auxiliary electrode is pillar or cone shaped, a plane part of the main electrode 8 is exposed to the discharge space 10, and its area is made to be larger than the surface area of the auxiliary electrode 9.
