PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin flat platy grain emulsion further excellent in sensitivity to color sensitization, a method for preparing the emulsion and a silver halide photographic sensitive material using the emulsion. SOLUTION: The silver halide photographic emulsion has <=40% coefficient of variation of equivalent circular diameter of all grains and >=50% of the total projected area is occupied by flat platy grains which satisfy the following requirements (i)-(vi); (i) silver iodobromide or silver iodochlorobromide grains having (111) faces as the principal surfaces, (ii) >=1.0μm equivalent circular diameter and <=0.1μm thickness, (iii) each of the grains comprises a core a shell containing >=10 dislocation lines ranging from the interface between the shell and the core to the edge of the grain, (iv) when each of the flat platy grains is seen from a direction perpendicular to the principal surfaces, the shell forming region is a circular region corresponding to >=10% of the length from a side of the grain to the center, (v) when the average silver iodide content of the grains is represented by I mol% (0.3<I<20), the silver iodide content of each of the grains is in the range of 0.7 I to 1.3 I and (vi) >=0.5μm equivalent spherical diameter.
