SOLUTION: A conveyance direction conversion part 8 passes the paper sheet 3, etc., from a long conveyance path 11 to a short conveyance part 12 while clamping the paper sheet 3, etc., by a driving shaft 42 and a guide shaft 45 constituting a rotary shaft part 41 and making the paper sheet 3, etc., rotate on itself by 90 deg. to the side of a rotating direction L along a conveyance surface (in the plane direction of a guide 5). Consequently, the generation of skew is suppressed in the long conveyance path 11 and one sheet of paper, etc., can be detected for a long distance, so the detection precision can be improved. On the short conveyance path 12, on the other hand, many sheets of paper 3, etc., can be conveyed at short intervals, so the paper sheet 3, etc., can be conveyed at a slow speed to reduce the noise of a conveyance motor, etc.
